Cherokee Nation has been awarded a national award of excellence for being the 2020 Tribal Destination of the Year by the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association. This award is no surprise to those of us that work in the tourism industry in Tahlequah as the efforts by the Cherokee Nation to restore and promote their historical sites are extremely impressive. Typically held annually and in-person, the 22nd American Indian Tourism Conference was held virtually on September 16th, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are delighted to recognize Cherokee Nation as the Tribal Destination of the Year,” said Sherry L. Rupert, CEO of AIANTA. “Cherokee Nation has been a great partner to AIANTA and serves as an example to all tribal nations on how to encourage prosperity and growth through the perpetuation of culture.” Cherokee Nation operates six cultural museums, a couple of retail shops, and several historic sites in Tahlequah and around the Cherokee Nation jurisdiction.
