Museums and historic sites are often dismissed as being boring and uneventful, but in Cherokee County, there are many extremely interesting museums with artifacts that can only be found in Northeastern Oklahoma. Read our list below for five reasons to visit a museum or historic site on your next visit to Tahlequah!

Learn Something New

Do you know the old saying "knowledge is power"? It's true... museums carry artifacts and materials that bring history to life. When you visit a museum there are descriptions that go along with the display. Take the time to read and learn about the stories and background of the displays. Some schools are actually using local museums as teaching opportunities which are awesome... after all the main goal is to engage and educate society. You might actually find something interesting! It also makes for a great casual conversation topic!

Be Inspired

Some of us are very technical, by the book people. Others are creative minds who are always innovating. If you have a creative mind visiting a museum might just be what the doctor ordered. It's common for us to get creativity blocked. We have so many things going on in our heads that our minds become blank and we get stuck in a rut! Escape to a museum and let the arts and crafts help inspire you to continue creating. Seeing the displays could be the perfect inspiration you need for your next great project.

Fellowship with Friends and Family

Everyone has their family traditions. For some, it might be a game of football. For others, it could be a fun board game. If you are looking for a new tradition, or just want to switch things up for a weekend consider visiting your local museum! Sharing moments with family is something we all cherish so why not do it in an active learning environment?  The kids will love watching the interactive videos and seeing all the cool art displays. The best part is they will stay occupied and they will be learning a thing or two in the process!

Support Local History

Museums are the main attractions for tourism. If you are visiting a town that has museums... GO! When you visit a museum, check-in, let people know you are there. In doing this you are spreading awareness so that others can experience them too! Many museums are nonprofit so the way they get their word out is from people visiting and talking about them! Not only will you be supporting the museum but you will be supporting the growth and development of the community that surrounds it. Tourism plays a huge part in a town’s economic growth so go visit, and share with others! Spread that awareness!

Museums Can Increase Your Happiness

Excuses such as "I don't want to spend the money to go to a museum" or "it's not really worth my time" are yesterday’s news! Think about it this way. In this day and age, you can visit a museum with a family of 10 for probably less than $50.  For that same family eating out might cost $100. The difference aside from cost is that one activity (eating) is material, the other (visiting a museum) is a whole experience. Experiences drive our lives. When we spend more time having experiences, rather than material things our happiness skyrockets. I challenge everyone to have more experiences. Sit back and watch your quality of life improve.

Museums are a great opportunity to learn and obtain rich experiences that you will remember forever. Come for a visit to see all of the museums and historic sites that Tahlequah has to offer.  You can find information on our website www.tourtahlequah.com and on social media on Facebook and Instagram.
